History of State Olympic Association
Olympic sports such as Hockey, Athletics, Volleyball, Football, and several others have a long-standing tradition in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Athletes from these Islands have proudly represented India on the International stage, with participation beginning as early as 1994 in the Asian Games—particularly in water sports—where Mr. Johney Romal secured a Bronze Medal in the K1 Kayaking event. Meantime, Football is popularly playing in these islands with the Governing Council of the Andaman & Nicobar Football Association headed by Mr. Manoranjan Bhakta, the then Member of Parliament, also played a pivotal role in promoting one of the popular Olympic Event i.e. Football at both the National and International levels.
Recognizing this sporting potential, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) first included the Andaman & Nicobar contingent in the National Games in 1994 on a partial basis. A landmark moment followed in 1996, when initiated for legal entity of State Olympic in these islands. This initiative was led by Mr. V. A. Shiyad who took the pioneering step at the young age of 22 with a frame work of Constitution of State Olympic Association. The Executive Council of the Olympic Association in Andaman & Nicobar Island was elected with Mr. Beant Singh, the then Director of Education, elected as the first President, and Mr. V. A. Shiyad as the Secretary General and other Board Members. The said Governing Council was failed to fulfil the IOA compliance for affiliation. Again Mr. V. A. Shiyad took step to conclude the compliance of the IOA and elected an Executive Council of Andaman & Nicobar State Olympic Association headed by Commander Paul James, Former Director of Shipping as President and Mr. V. A. Shiyad as Secretary General respectively and approved by Indian Olympic Association. Since then, the Association has been officially conducting State Games once in every two years, celebrating Olympic Day, and organizing District Games annually. The Island Contingent regularly participates in the National Games under the aegis of the IOA. Athletes from the Islands have brought laurels by winning medals at the National Games, particularly in Cycling, Canoeing & Kayaking, and Rowing. On several occasions, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands have even surpassed Delhi State in the overall medal tally, marking a proud achievement for this Union Territory. During these periods, Island Athletes such as Mr. Esaw Alben, Mr. David Bekhame, and Ms. Deborah Herald distinguished themselves through their achievements at the International Competitions, National Games and participating Commonwealth & Asian Games, bringing recognition and pride to the Union Territory.
